Duty Station: Based in Nairobi, with frequent travel to target counties of Kajiado, Machakos, and Kiambu.
Contract period: 13 months

KRCS Overview

Kenya Red Cross Society (hereafter, KRCS) is a humanitarian relief organization established by an Act of Parliament, Cap 256 Laws of Kenya. As an auxiliary to both the national and county governments, KRCS works to alleviate human suffering and save lives of the most vulnerable in our communities. It works through a network of 47 county branches, and 8 regions and the national headquarters, leveraging its wide network of over 250,000 members and volunteers across the country.

KRCS has committed to support the protection of children and young people and facilitate initiatives that help them to reach their potential and lead positive change in their communities.

About the project

The Basketball Experience – Disability Inclusion (BE-DI) Project is a 16-month pilot initiative funded by AFD and NBA Africa and implemented by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) youth department. This sport-for-development project leverages basketball to foster inclusion, resilience, and essential life skills among children with visual, hearing, and physical disabilities. The program will be implemented in 40 schools across Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, and Machakos counties.

Job Summary

The Disability Inclusion Officer will lead all disability inclusion components of the BE-DI project. They will provide technical guidance, coordinate inclusive programming, strengthen capacity of coaches and teachers, and ensure adherence to disability-inclusive education and sport standards. The officer will work closely with schools, disability organizations, caregivers, and county stakeholders to foster inclusive environments that enable children with disabilities, especially girls to meaningfully participate and thrive.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Technical Leadership on Disability Inclusion
  • Provide expert guidance on inclusive sports methodologies for children with visual, hearing, and mobility impairments.
  • Lead the contextualization and adaptation of coaching methods, training manuals, and life skills content.
  • Ensure all program activities align with disability rights frameworks (CRPD, UDL principles, MoE guidelines).

School and Community Engagement
  • Support mapping and assessment of schools for disability inclusion readiness.
  • Facilitate disability awareness sessions for parents, caregivers, Boards of Management, and community leaders.
  • Strengthen linkages between schools and disability rights organizations.

Capacity Building
  • Train coaches, sign language interpreters, teachers, aides, and KRCS staff on disability inclusion, communication techniques, and adaptive sports practices.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship to field teams on inclusive delivery approaches.
  • Support orientation sessions for schools on accessible safeguarding and PSEA standards.

Implementation Support
  • Oversee implementation of inclusive basketball clinics, ensuring accessibility, safety, and participation of children with different abilities.
  • Support procurement, customization, and distribution of adapted sports equipment.
  • Ensure all clinics and tournaments actively include girls with disabilities.

Monitoring, Documentation & Learning
  • Conduct regular school visits to monitor inclusion practices and identify emerging needs.
  • Collect and analyze disability-disaggregated data on participation, skills outcomes, and inclusion indicators.
  • Document best practices, case studies, and success stories from beneficiaries.

Stakeholder Coordination
  • Coordinate with Ministry of Education, County Education Officers, disability organizations (DPOs), KISE, County Sports Directors, and other partners.
  • Participate in quarterly stakeholder meetings and technical working groups.
  • Support organization of Awareness Days, mini-tournaments, and the End Game Tournament.

Safeguarding & Protection
  • Ensure all project activities uphold KRCS safeguarding, PSEA, and child protection policies.
  • Guide coaches and teachers on disability-sensitive safeguarding practices and safe reporting mechanisms.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Needs Education, Disability Studies, Occupational Therapy, Community Development, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in disability inclusion, inclusive education, or child protection programming.
  • Proven experience engaging children with visual, hearing, or physical impairments.
  • Familiarity with disability rights frameworks, inclusive sports, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, PSEA, and child protection in humanitarian or development settings.
  • Experience coordinating with government, schools, and disability organizations.

  • Proficient facilitation, coaching, and training skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication abilities.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort with data collection tools.
  • Ability to work independently, travel frequently, and manage field logistics.
  • High level of empathy, patience, and sensitivity when working with children.
